Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
This wine has an intensely concentrated nose redolent of wild blueberries, huckleberry, cherry and plums. Fruit aromas are complemented by notes of toasty oak, cocoa, vanilla, cola berry, black pepper and baking spice. On the palate, bright juicy berries, with hints of pie crust, vanilla and white pepper. The acidity in the long pleasant finish.
Vineyard Notes
This organically grown Petite Sirah comes from grower Dave Harde's vineyard in sunny Fair Play, El Dorado. In 2014 we were three years into our drought and harvest was wrapping up when the Petite Sirah finally was ready to pick. It was harvested on October 9th three days after the Caberent Sauvignon which is usually my last to crush.
Production Notes
Understanding the tannic nature of the Petite Sirah. I constructed a wine making protocol to maximize the varietal characteristics while minimizing harshness and bitterness. These fully mature grapes had the advantage of lower "green" or harsh tannins. The wine was cold soaked on the skins for three days before fermentation and fermented cool. The wine was given extended barrel aging in 80% french & 20% American Oak barrels for 28 months to ensure soft, yet firm wine tannins. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
Winemaker Notes
The inky and completely opaque dark purple color of this wine is the color of Huckleberry juice. It is so dense it literally clings to the glass after you swirl it. The acidity in the long pleasant finish balances the tannins with lingering fruit.
